An Overview to Anna Netrebko's 2008-2009 Season

On a personal side, we could say that this Anna Netrebko's season started with the birth of her son Tiago Arua in Wien on 5. Sep 2008 and will end with her upcoming wedding with Erwin Schrott, father of Tiago Arua. The place and date of the wedding has not been announced, but it could take place at the end of August in Austria.

On the professional side, the 2008-2009 Season for Anna Netrebko started in January 2009, later than usual due to the birth of Tiago. Anna Netrebko has performed in 5 different operas: Donizetti's Lucia di Lammemoor at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, the Met in New York (role debut at the Met) and the Wiener Staatsoper in Wien (role debut at the Wiener Staatsoper), Bellini's I Capuleti e I Montecchi at the ROH in London (role debut at the ROH), Verdi's La Traviata at the Opernhaus Zürich in Zürich (debut at the Opernhaus Zürich), the Wiener Staatsoper in Wien and the San Francisco Opera in San Francisco (role debut at the San Francisco Opera), Puccini's La Bohème at the Bayerische Staatsoper in München (role debut at the Bayerische Staatsoper) and Tchaikovsky's Iolanta at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden in Baden-Baden (role debut).

Furthermore the Austrian-Russian star soprano sang in 4 concerts and 2 lied recitals: the Gala Concert "Friends of Valery Gergiev, The Stars of the Stars" held at the Mariinsky Theater on the occasion of Valery Gergiev's 56th Birthday, the "Anna Netrebko Gala" at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theater, concerts with Dmitri Hvorostovsky in Braunschweig and München and lied recitals in Mannheim and at the Salzburger Festspiele in Salzburg.

From a personal point of view I have attended 4 opera performances, being able to see Anna in Lucia di Lammermoor in Wien, I Capuleti e I Montecchi in London, La Bohème in München and Iolanta in Baden-Baden. Attending each one of those performances has been a fantastic and unique experience. It was in Wien, after the Lucia's performance, where I was formally first introduced to Anna by Jeffrey Vanderveen.

Now the season has arrived to an end and we are looking forward to attending some of the exciting performances and concerts of the new season.

Meanwhile, we would like to send our best wishes of happiness to Anna, Erwin and Tiago.

Anna Netrebko, Liederabend, Grosses Festspielhaus, Salzburg 17. Aug 2009

Anna Netrebko, accompanied by Daniel Barenboim at the piano, has performed in a sold-out Lied Recital of the Salzburger Festspiele, held at the Grosses Festspielhaus, Salzburg on 17. August 2009. The demand was already in January several times higher than the supply tickets and, till the last minute, the waitlist has been hopelessly long.

The programme, featuring selected songs by Russian composers Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakow and Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, has been the same one chosen for the lied recital given just a few days before at the Rosengarten, Mannheim on 12. August 2009, where, on that occasion, the Russian soprano was accompanied by Elena Bashkirova at the piano. After the 20 songs by the two Russian composers, they were two encores ending with Richard Strauss's "Cäcilie". The show ended with a standing ovation.

The lied recital has been recorded, not only for the Ö1 radio broadcast scheduled on 26. Aug 2009 19:30. It has been announced that a live CD it is planned to be released.

A lied recital, featuring also selected songs by Russian composers Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakow and Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, will be given by Anna Netrebko, accompanied by Daniel Barenboim at the piano, at the Festtage 2010, Philharmonie, Berlin on 29. March 2010.

Press Reviews
Herbert has kindly translated some extracts of the reviews published in the German press. Christoph Lindenbauer, in his review for the Kleine Zeitung, says that the Liederabend at the Salzburger Festsiele will be released as a live CD.
"Anna Netrebko is an excellent singer [...], unique in her kind as well as technically and artistically on a very, very high level. Last night she proved at the Salzburg Festival that she is able to enthuse her audience not only by culinary delicacies, but also by relatively unknown, even unwieldy lieder."
Anna Netrebkos russische Lieder - By Christoph Lindenbauer/APA, Kleine Zeitung, 18. Aug 2009 [German]
"Netrebko's performance on stage [...] and especially her manifold mode of expression are and will be world-class."
Anna Netrebkos russische Lieder - By Christoph Lindenbauer/APA, Kleine Zeitung, 18. Aug 2009 [German]
"It is sensational how Netrebko plays with the colours and can switch from a dark, guttural sound to shining bright, crystal clear soprano timbre, effortlessly filling the Festspielhaus with her voice. Voluminous force and grandeur are followed by a whispered piano, and everything is well-balanced and perfectly in line with her Russian-dramatic gestures. Netrebko's voice does (almost invariably) what Netrebko wants her to do. She plays with all facets of sound in all pitches - not only where it is technically easy."
Anna Netrebkos russische Lieder - By Christoph Lindenbauer/APA, Kleine Zeitung, 18. Aug 2009 [German]
"It was the glorious climax and also the conclusion of the Salzburg Festival 2009. [...] Powerful and voluminous, but also delicate, bright and with a crystal-clear voice, soprano Anna Netrebko easily filled the Festival Hall and underlined her singing with a typical Russian-dramatic gestures."
Anna Netrebko – nach der Babypause besser als je zuvor - Österreich News, 19. Aug 2009 [German]
"Some day she will be the most magnificent Marschallin ("Rosenkavalier") of all times, because she knows melancholy as well as happiness, and because her exuding voice is a marvelous frenzy of sound."
Süddeutsche Zeitung, 19. Aug 2009
"[...] sa voix se raffermit et déploie toutes les séductions d’un timbre fruité, richement coloré, avec des aigus glorieux et une palette de nuances raffinée. Pour chaque mélodie, elle sait trouver le climat, l’expression, les couleurs qui caractérisent un chant engagé et passionné. Sentiment encore renforcé après l’entracte avec Tchaïkovski [...]"

Reports
Herbert attended the lied recital and has kindly written the following report for the blog:
As you know the programme was almost completely in Russian - 20 songs by Rimsky-Korssakoff and Tchaikowsky, plus two encores: "The old mother" by Dvorak, sung in Czech, and Strauss "Cäcilia" in German.

Before the recital began an announcer said that the van which should bring the programmes had an accident (!) and so the programmes would come during the interval. Anna wanted that everybody could understand the texts, so an asisstant came on stage before each song and read the German translation - which was a bit unusual, but it helped a lot.

Anna is becoming a new kind of artist - more "serious" than we know her! A recital competely in Russian, with many sad songs, also some happy ones in between - that was new to many people in the audience. But the way she sang and how she acted on stage was Anna as we love her. Fantastic, very emotional, with a lot of passion. And there was a perfect interaction between her and Elena Bashkirova at the piano.

There was no meeting or CD signing after the performance. One of the ushers told me that she left the concert hall right after the show in a large limousine, because she had to go to her hotel where her baby was waiting.

Press Reviews
Herbert has kindly translated into english some extracts of what has been published in the German press.
"Her round, velvet, dark voice and her melancholic Russian songs caused goose pimples in the audience"
Anna Netrebko sorgte für Gänsehaut - Berliner Zeitung - Aktuelles Kultur, 13. Aug 2009 [German]

"Her voice has become even warmer, rounder, if you will: richer in content and in overtones. Her pianissimo easily fills the Mozartsaal which is actually too big for such an intimate evening. Her notes resonate, they are omnipresent in the hall. This is what characterizes a great voice."
Von der Natürlichkeit des Seins - by Stefan M. Dettlinger, morgenweb.de, Mannheimer Morgen 14. Aug 2009 [German] [Photos]

"She is most affecting when she charmingly smiles at Elina Bashkirova's excellent and subtle piano prelude of "Was I not a little blade of grass?", vibrating her soul, and then she sings a phrase which in its soft sounding range seems to be flying into the universe. A great evening!"

Anna Netrebko and Erwin Schrott will marry very soon

The wedding of opera star Anna Netrebko and her partner and father of her son Tiago, the Uruguayan bass-baritone Erwin Schrott, seems imminent.

In an interview published in the Thursday issue of "Seitenblicke Magazin" Schrott said: "It will happen soon - very soon, we know the place, and we know the date."

Schrott provided some more details: "It does not matter whether the celebration is large or small. In any case it will be nothing pompous. But we want to have our our families - and they have to travel from southern Russia and South America. Therefore it was not easy to find a date convenient for everybody. But surprisingly, we did it."

Netrebko said: "We are a very happy couple. And of course we will marry. But it is difficult to draw up all necessary documents. It takes more than a week."

The wedding could take place at the second half of August, after Netrebko's lied recital in Salzburg on 17. Aug and before her concert at the Red Square in Moscow on 4. Sep 2009. Those dates would be also convenient for Schrott, who is singing the title role of Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Theater an der Wien until 14. Aug, being his next performance in Mos in Egitto at the Opernhaus Zürich on 19. Sep 2009.
