An Overview to Anna Netrebko's 2008-2009 Season

On a personal side, we could say that this Anna Netrebko's season started with the birth of her son Tiago Arua in Wien on 5. Sep 2008 and will end with her upcoming wedding with Erwin Schrott, father of Tiago Arua. The place and date of the wedding has not been announced, but it could take place at the end of August in Austria.

On the professional side, the 2008-2009 Season for Anna Netrebko started in January 2009, later than usual due to the birth of Tiago. Anna Netrebko has performed in 5 different operas: Donizetti's Lucia di Lammemoor at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, the Met in New York (role debut at the Met) and the Wiener Staatsoper in Wien (role debut at the Wiener Staatsoper), Bellini's I Capuleti e I Montecchi at the ROH in London (role debut at the ROH), Verdi's La Traviata at the Opernhaus Zürich in Zürich (debut at the Opernhaus Zürich), the Wiener Staatsoper in Wien and the San Francisco Opera in San Francisco (role debut at the San Francisco Opera), Puccini's La Bohème at the Bayerische Staatsoper in München (role debut at the Bayerische Staatsoper) and Tchaikovsky's Iolanta at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden in Baden-Baden (role debut).

Furthermore the Austrian-Russian star soprano sang in 4 concerts and 2 lied recitals: the Gala Concert "Friends of Valery Gergiev, The Stars of the Stars" held at the Mariinsky Theater on the occasion of Valery Gergiev's 56th Birthday, the "Anna Netrebko Gala" at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theater, concerts with Dmitri Hvorostovsky in Braunschweig and München and lied recitals in Mannheim and at the Salzburger Festspiele in Salzburg.

From a personal point of view I have attended 4 opera performances, being able to see Anna in Lucia di Lammermoor in Wien, I Capuleti e I Montecchi in London, La Bohème in München and Iolanta in Baden-Baden. Attending each one of those performances has been a fantastic and unique experience. It was in Wien, after the Lucia's performance, where I was formally first introduced to Anna by Jeffrey Vanderveen.

Now the season has arrived to an end and we are looking forward to attending some of the exciting performances and concerts of the new season.

Meanwhile, we would like to send our best wishes of happiness to Anna, Erwin and Tiago.

  1. You're a lucky lucky guy!
    How I envy you!

  2. By the way : Many thanks for your wonderful blog Carlos !!!

  3. Many thanks for this wonderful overview. I am looking forward to the upcoming season and I am happy to be invited to visit your blog.

  4. A great look back over the past season - I'm hoping Anna can squeeze in her cancelled London gig at some point in the next one! Feeling ever so slightly jealous about the Festtage next year....and not just about the Anna recital either.... :))

  5. Carlos,

I applaud your sentiments and dialogue. We saw Anna in Lucia at MET and in Traviata at SFO. She was absolutley stunning in both performances. As you know, her uncanny acting ability and rich voice are truly something to behold. We look forward to seeing her next year at MET in Boheme and Contes d'Hoffmann.

The ability to meet Anna at SFO following La Traviata was memorable. She has style, class. charisma and is very warm and approachable to he numerous fans.

I only wish that Iolanta was recorded for posterity. The Capulets with Garanca from ROH is wonderful!

Carlos, we all truly appreciate your updates and commentary. It is wonderful to share our collective appreciation for Anna.

    Warm regards,

  6. Just returned from a brief holiday - great to have your blog back, and love the new photo. Delighted to hear you were introduced to Anna in Wien - you deserve it for all the excellent coverage you provide. I must admit I envy you - I have yet to have the pleasure of meeting this lovely lady.

  7. My wife and I first had the pleasure of hearing Anna sing in a Washington Opera production of Rigoletto in 1999. Enraptured, we have seized every opportunity we had had since then to see and hear yer on stage - in Los Angeles, in Philadelphia, a number of times in both Washington and New York and, most recently, in San Francisco (where we also had the pleasure of chatting with Anna as she left the opera house, baby Tiagu tucked tightly under her arm). Having missed the chances we had to hear Callas live in her prime, we determined not to make the same mistake with Anna, the remarkable arc of whose career was plainly foreshadowed in the Gilda who seduced us ten years ago.

In following Anna's career, we have greatly appreciated the impressive quantity and quality of timely information that you have been providing in your devoted blog.

Thank you, and please keep up the great work!

  8. Robert, thank you very much for yoour kind words! Your wife and you have been one of the lucky people who got the opportunity to see Anna quite early in her stunning career and, more important, one of those smart people who immediately recognize her outstanding singing and acting on the stage! A privilege. Kind regards and I will be glad to get your reports and impressions of Anna's performances in USA.

  9. Robert,

As Carlos & others know we have seen Anna in I Puritani, Romeo & Juliet, Lucia, Rigoletto, Traviata (San Francisco) and in concert in Abu Dhabi. This year we will see her in Boheme and Tales of Hoffman at MET. My wife and I just love her. What a treat to get her autograph and chat after Traviata. We tried to see her Le Nozze de Figaro in Salzburg, but it was sold out many times over.

Carlos has done a wonderful in sharing her accomplishments.
