I own the DVD of La Boheme and am not a fan of "filmed" operas. This version is beautiful, melodramatic and corny. Although the production was completely done on sets, it looks like an Italian town in the middle of a cold winter. The swing in Mimi's bedroom is really out of context. There is gorgeous singing from Villazon and Netrebko. Netrebko's portrayal of Mimi dying is just remarkable coupled with Rolando's outpouring of grief as the opera closes. Her coughing and pallor are very believable, yet you are limited by the camera's singular point of view which can be very distracting and annoying.

I am sad to report that this DVD does not reflect the drama of a live performance such as the Salzburg Traviata, L'Elisir D'Amore, I Puritani, etc. This DVD is more like a movie than a live performance. Enjoy it for the singing and acting, but it is far different from a "live" performance. I have seen several of the MET HD performances of the past season and find some of the camera angles annoying and distracting. There is nothing truly like the excitement and memories from a live performance.

We are truly looking forward to her live performance of La Boheme with Piotr Beczala at the MET in the upcoming season.
