"Verdi With Popcorn, and Trepidation" by Daniel J. Wakin, The New York Times, 13. Feb 2009
FOR 400 years humans have stood on stages and conveyed passion through song. Great buildings were raised for them to perform in. The titled and the rich paid homage with cash and devotion.
Opera, that most electrifying and moving of the high arts, has remained remarkably unchanged in its history, adapting to bigger houses, electric lights, electronic stage machinery, the recording industry. It has persevered despite accelerating waves of new claims on our attention, from television to Twitter.
But now another force has emerged, which has the potential to transform how opera is produced and received. You can check it out at your local multiplex.

The Met announces 2009-2010 season
Today the Met has announced the new 2009-2010 season.
A powerhouse team joins forces for Offenbach’s psychological fantasy Les Contes d'Hoffmann. James Levine conducts, and Tony Award winner Bart Sher (South Pacific) returns after the triumph of his Met Barber of Seville to direct. Inspired by Kafka, Sher describes his production as “a magical journey in which the character works out different manifestations of his psyche.” Rolando Villazón plays Hoffmann, a tour de force role for the tenor. Also starring soprano Anna Netrebko as the tragic Antonia, Elina Garanca as the ambiguous Nicklausse, and René Pape as the demonic four villains.
Anna Netrebko stars in La Bohème, the most popular opera in the repertory. Piotr Beczala, who signaled his arrival as a top lyric tenor in last season’s Lucia di Lammermoor, sings his first Met Rodolfo in Franco Zeffirelli’s legendary production. Gerald Finley and George Petean alternate as Marcello, opposite Nicole Cabell and Ruth Ann Swenson alternating as Musetta.
The 2009-10 HD series will feature nine transmissions, beginning October 10 with Tosca and continuing with Aida (October 24), Turandot (November 7), Les Contes d’Hoffmann (December 19), Der Rosenkavalier (January 9), Carmen (January 16), Simon Boccanegra (February 6), Hamlet (March 27), and Armida (May 1).

Breaking News - Rolando Villazón withdraws from all performances of Iolantha in Baden-Baden
Reluctantly, Mexican tenor Rolando Villazón has withdrawn from the 2009 summer opera production “Jolanthe”. Three performances in the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden will be affected - 18th, 21st and 24th of July. Russian soprano Anna Netrebko will sing the title role in the Tchaikovsky opera as planned, alongside a tenor yet to be announced, and Valery Gergiev will take charge of the musical direction.
Villazón does, however, does offer some consolation to the Baden-Baden audience by agreeing to a third concert performance of the opera “Werther” by Jules Massenet on the 14th of June 2009 in the Festspielhaus, alongside Elina Garanca. The first two performances on the 7th and 10th of June 2009 have already sold out.
The Festspielhaus Baden-Baden is offering a full refund to patrons who have already purchased tickets to “Jolanthe” should they decide not to attend. However, Artistic and Managing Director Andreas Mölich-Zebhauser believes that “many opera lovers will come to Baden-Baden to see Anna Netrebko, Valery Gergiev and the St. Petersburg Marrinsky Theatre Ensemble, and will forgive Rolando his withdrawal”.
Villazón explained his decision in a letter to the Baden-Baden Artistic and Managing Director, stating: “In the past weeks I have undertaken detailed preparation for “Jolanthe”. After studying the music in great detail I have regrettably come to the conclusion that the role of Count Vaudemont does not conform to the repertoire on which I need to concentrate in the near future. He further went on to write: “I am sure you know how important it is for singers to feel completely at ease in their roles. For this reason, and following careful deliberation, I have taken the decision not to include this role in my repertoire, and it is therefore with a heavy heart that I have to withdraw from this production.”
