Anna is a phenomenon! She seems to have energy without any limits.
Yesterday afternoon, at 3 p.m., she and her sister Natalia attended a performance of “Don Giovanni”, with Erwin Schrott as Leporello. During the interval she met him on the balcony of the “Haus für Mozart”. After the show they all had an early dinner at the popular restaurant Triangel. At 8:30 p.m. the evening performance of “Le Rossignol / Iolanta” was to begin – and (after the interval between the two short operas) duly at 10 p.m. Anna entered the stage in her elegant white and silver dress, really looking like a princess!
Again she showed what a unique and outstanding stage artist she is. Her soprano was all clear and shining, her acting was delicate and convincing, and together with Polish tenor Piotr Beczala she was in perfect vocal harmony. Let’s hope that at the Salzburg Festival 2012 there will be more than just two performances of “La Bohème” with Anna and Piotr in the leading roles!
After the show, at about midnight, she left the Festspielhaus and strolled across the square back to the Triangel again, where she met Erwin and some friends sitting outside in a warm summer night. Piotr Beczala and his wife joined them, and after the usual hustle and razzmatazz with press photographers and excited fans had ebbed away they all had a relaxed and well-deserved time as “normal” guests like anybody else. I can imagine that they enjoy moments like these very much.
Well, it was the last performance for Anna at the Salzburg Festival this year. Erwin Schrott has three more Leporellos to sing, and in ten days the Festival 2011 will be over – what a pity.
By the way, a big salute and THANK YOU to somebody very important, who attends many performances but keeps most of the time in the background: Markus Hinterhäuser is this year’s director of the Salzburg Festival, and he has organized – as in recent years – this outstanding musical program not only with Anna, but of course with many many more first class artists. It’s a bit sad that he will leave Salzburg next year.
This performance of "Iolanta" was certainly one of the three best productions I have seen this season. A top cast, wonderful music, which must have affected everbody - and above all Anna, better than ever. Although it was a concert, I was thrilled by her minimalistic gestures which underlined Iolanta's feelings and emotions as a blind person who doesn't know that she is blind and that there is something like light and colours and -as the text says - that eyes are not only there to shed tears. The moment when she begins to see for the first time is so touching and convincing that many people in the audience - me too - couldn't hold back their tears. Apart from that, the great duet of Anna and Piotr Beczala was another moment when they brought the house down. And then the finale - when the singers, the chorus and the orchestra made "a lot of noise", and still you could hear Anna's clear voice above everything else! No wonder that at curtain calls everybody in the house was on their feet for many many rounds of applause. A unique performance! And don't forget - in less than 24 hours she will be performing again in Berlin on the Waldbühne! A true phenomenon.
