REPORTS

Philharmonie, Berlin 29. Feb 2012
By Herbert

I have attended the benefit concert of Daniel Barenboim, Anna Netrebko and the Staatskapelle Berlin at the Philharmonie. The concert was almost sold out and in support of the reconstruction of the “Staatsoper unter den Linden”.

In the first part Anna sang three German lieder by Richard Strauss: “Wiegenlied”, “Morgen!” and “Caecilie”. She must have rehearsed quite a bit, because her German was excellent. And with her new hair cut – short and zippy – she looked like a Hollywood star.

In the second part she thrilled the audience by an aria I had never heard before: the romanza “L’altra notte” of Margherita from Arrigo Boito’s “Mefistofele” – full of despair and emotions. The way she sang and interpreted it was awesome, gripping and stunning. I saw how Daniel Barenboim wiped a tear out of his eye! And I hope that this aria will be on an opera stage (and on CD or DVD) soon!

She finished the official part of the programme by Elena’s “Mercè, dilette amiche” from Verdi’s “I vespri siciliani”.

Then there was a break, and a piano was transported hydraulically from the bottom of the orchestra pit up to the stage – quite interesting ;-)).

Then Barenboim and Anna added two songs from her Russian CD – two superb encores which made the audience cheer and jubilate.

After the show she affirmed at the stage door that she will go on tour with “Iolanta”! It was a wonderful evening, and it showed how much Daniel Barenboim and Anna estimate and like each other!
