One of the biggest and most eagerly awaited operatic events of the year is the Teatro alla Scala's season opening, which traditionally takes place every year on 7. December.

This year, la Scala opens the 2011/2012 season with a new production of Mozart's masterpiece Don Giovanni, directed by Robert Carsen, conducted by the brand new Musical Director Daniel Barenboim and with a de-luxe stellar cast including Peter Mattei in the title role, Anna Netrebko as Donna Anna, Barbara Frittoli as Donna Elvira, Bryn Terfel as Leporello and Giuseppe Filianoti as Don Ottavio.

Oct 2000 to sing the role of Natasha Rostova in Prokofiev's masterpiece War and Peace conducted by Valery Gergiev. Now, eleven years later, the Diva Assoluta del Mondo, returns to la Scala to open the 2011/2012 season, making her opera house role debut as Donna Anna in Mozart's Don Giovanni, one of her signature roles that has previously sung at the Mariinsky Theater, St. Petersburg (2002), Salzburger Festspiele in Salzburg (2002, 2003), Royal Opera House, London (2003), Concertgebouw, Amsterdam (2003), Wiener Staatsoper, Wien (2004), Met Tour to Japan, Kobe and Tokyo (2006), Royal Opera House, London (2007), Mariinsky Theater, St. Petersburg (2007) and Opernhaus Zürich, Zürich (2011).

"Depuis ses débuts en 2002 au Mariinsky de Saint-Pétersbourg puis au Festival de Salzbourg, la Donna Anna d'Anna Netrebko est superlative. La jeune Autrichienne possède tout : le physique, le charme et surtout ce métal chaud du timbre, l'aisance dans l'aigu, la puissance de projection, l'innombrable des nuances."

  1. Tonight's premiere was a production of DON GIOVANNI I have been waiting for for a long time: clear, convincing, imaginative, touching, with a tremendous cast. In my opinion the ladies - Anna Netrebko, Barbara Frittoli and Anna Prohaska (!) - topped the male singers. Only Bryn Terfel was comparable to them. Thanks to director Robert Carsen for giving Anna Netrebko the chance to appear at her best both vocally and as an actrice.

  2. I was mostly dissapointed with the production and in particular when the singers are on the Platea, walking around, even on the presidential box :-) I was nicely surprised wit Barbara Frittoli because she didn't like me in the Met production bradcast some days ago. Tonight she has been very good. I loved Anna Prohaska! And, what to say about Anna... fantastic!!! The first big applause and bravas were for her after her "vendetta" aria f the first act. Terfel was very good, in particular singing the famous "Madamina, il catalogo e questo". Vocally, Mattei was good, but... something was missing to BE the Don. I didn't like it Kwangchul Youn as Il Commendatore.
I liked Barenboim. Very good when Il Commendatore appears at the end of the second act.

  3. Oh yes, Anna Prohaska was a surprise! I have never heard and seen such a lovely Zerlina. And for Peter Mattei..., well it is a bit nasty to say that, I know, but coming from Sweden he stood around like a piece of IKEA furniture most of the time. Why didn't Ildebrando d'Arcangelo sing the opening night?

  4. Like a piece of IKEA... hahahahahahaha :-)))))

Ildebrando would have been much better! I'm glad I got my ticket for 20. Dec :-)

Another lovely Zerlina would have been Eleonora Vindau :-)

  5. Gracias Carlos!!!
