After taking a 6-month break from opera to give birth to Tiago Aruä, her first son with bass-baritone Erwin Schrott, Anna Netrebko returns for her Met debut in the title role of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor on 26. January 2009.
The Met site has just published a recent interview with Anna, in which she talks about her return to the stage and her thoughts about Lucia.
"I didn't open my mouth at all. I just started practicing in November. I thought my voice would be wobbling. But no, no–it was there. I immediately sang the whole role of Lucia! I was curious how my voice would be, because I know of sopranos who have lost their voices after giving birth. But it seems like it was exactly the same as it was before. I started to sing like I had never stopped. The only thing that was different was that I got tired quickly. But that's normal. Like a sportsman, you need to train the muscles"
"The first time I heard Lucia I thought, Oh, my God, how can anybody sing that? No way. But later I tried it, and immediately, from the first phrase, it felt so good"
"You have to be able to act, you have to be able to move... That said, I was once at a performance of Lucia at the Vienna Staatsoper, with a wonderful soprano, Edita Gruberova. She doesn't really act–she's a singer. And I have to tell you, that was one of the most amazing Lucias I ever saw. She was just standing and singing, and it was incredible. She blew me away with her singing"

Updated on 9. Jan 2009 Keri-Lynn Wilson conducts Lucia di Lammermoor at the Mariinsky Theater
The performances of Lucia di Lammermoor on 14. and 17. Jan 2009 have been now removed from the Michael Güttler's schedule on his website. Keri-Lynn Wilson will conduct those performances as it is currently announced on the playbill of the Mariinsky Theater website. Note that, there are 5-day to go for the premiere and the cast still has to be announced on the Mariinsky website. Nevertheless, a banner announcing the participation of Anna Netrebko has been included on the main page.
Now it's official, it has been announced by the San Francisco Opera on their web site and in a press release, that Anna Netrebko will not sing the July 1st performance of La Traviata and she will be replaced by Ailyn Pérez, a 2005 Merola Fellow.
In fact, this performance was removed from Anna's schedule on her web site more than 3 months ago, as it was announced on this blog. Then I asked the San Francisco Opera to confirm if she will perform on that date and I got an email saying that Anna would perform on July 1st. Unfortunately, for those who already had a ticket, Anna will not be singing on July 1st.

Anna Netrebko is on the cover of the December issue of the German magazine Opernwelt. The magazine inludes also an interview with Anna Netrebko in which she looks back to her career in the last years and forward to a life as a young mother with many appointments and wishes. Among those wishes she wants to sing Elsa in Richard Wagner's Lohengrin.
Anna Netrebko is on the cover of the December issue of the German magazine Das Opernglas. The magazine includes also an interview with Anna Netrebko in which she talks about her plans for the upcoming years.
Netrebko would like to give priority to family life, her son Tiago Arua and her fiance and father of her son Erwin Schrott, and during the early years their son probably will travel with them. Later on, when Tiago Aruä will start to go to the school, they will have to decide in which country they would like to live. Austria, where they live now is a fantastic option, but Spain also has a good chance.
In order to get more time for her son, Netrebko will reduce also the number of performances to sing, singing 5 or 6 performances of a production, rather than 8 or 9 like she was doing up to now.
In January 2009, Anna Netrebko makes her highly-anticipated return to the stage, following a six-month maternity leave after having given birth to her first son Tiago Aruä on 5. September 2008, to sing the title role in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, first at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg on 14. and 17. January 2009 and then at the Metropolitan Opera in New York on 26. and 29. January and 3. and 7. February 2009.
All four of her Met performances are sold out. The performance on 26. January 2009 will mark her role debut at the Met where she will be partnered on stage with tenor Rolando Villazón in their first joint appearance at the Met since April 2007, when the Met celebrated its 40th anniversary at Lincoln Center with a gala featuring the star singers.
The Lucia di Lammermoor performance on Saturday 7. February 2009 will be transmitted by The Met: Live in HD to movie theaters worldwide (1 PM ET/10 AM PT). An encore presentation will be given on Wednesday 18. February 2009 (7 PM local time). This one will be Netrebko's third consecutive Live in HD transmission from the Met, after those of Bellini's I Puritani on 6. January 2007 and Gounod's Roméo et Juliette on 15. December 2007.
The audio recording made during the live performances of I Capuleti e I Montecchi on 22., 25. and 28. April 2008 at the Wiener Konzerthaus in Wien, with Anna Netrebko as Giulietta, Elina Garanca as Roméo, Joseph Calleja as Tebaldo, Robert Gleadow as Lorenzo and Tiziano Bracci as Capellio, will be released by Deutsche Grammophone to coincide with Anna and Elina's London appearances on this opera at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in March and April 2009.
The program was recorded last June, when the three singers performed an outdoor concert in front of more than 10,000 people at the Imperial Park of Vienna’s Schönbrunn Palace on June 27, 2008.
Presented by Thirteen/WNET New York in high definition, the broadcast is led by French conductor Bertrand de Billy, directing the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. The program begins airing on Thirteen/WNET in New York on November 30, 2008 and later in other markets (check local listings).
On a 24. March 2008 post we anounced that Bizet's Carmen performances with Elina Garanca in the title role, Rolando Villazón as Don José and Anna Netrebko as Micaela, would be scheduled at the Wiener Staatsoper in 2010. The conductor would be Mariss Jansons.
Anna Netrebko has previously sung the role of Micaela in Tokyo on 14. November 1996, Mikkeli on 6. July 1997 and Sigulda on 5. August 2000. See the Anna Netrebko Performances Database to get more details on those performances.
According to the Elina Garanca calendar published on her website, the Carmen performances at the Wiener Staatsoper would be scheduled on 3., 6., 9., 12. and 15. May 2010.
Conductor Emmanuel Villaume talking about Anna Netrebko on the video included in the Limited Deluxe Edt. of the album Souvenirs.
"I have been working with many stars... and Anna is a very, very special artist. And there is something incredible with her, beautiful voice, beautiful person, of course,... but whenever she sings a phrase, it's Anna singing that phrase. And then I am not saying that the ego is in the front, it's just it is totally and immediately recognizable as Anna Netrebko interpreting that song. Very few artists have that ability. She is amazing for that! She is very simple in the way she is working as a colleague. Very demanding for herself, very demanding for the others, but she is giving a lot and so she is getting the best of all the other people"
La Bohème film starring Anna Netreko and Rolando Villazón will premiere in London on 19. December 2008 by Axiom Films and in Japan in January 2009 y Star Sands/Theaters Tokyo. It is well known that Anna Netrebko loves Richard Wagner musical dramas, but up to now she was not considering to sing any role of this repertoire. The only Wagner role that she did in the past, was a small role as a 2. Flower Maiden in Parsifal in St. Petersburg (May 1997), Istanbul (Jun 1998) and Salzburg (August 1998).
But now, in an interview given this summer in Salzburg for Classic FM Magazine she said "I want to try Wagner's Lohengrin because it is beautiful and I want to sing it". She also added that "there is much more repertoire I will be able to sing". To hear Anna as Elsa, would be one of the most exciting experiences! Brava Anna!
This month's issue of the Classic FM Magazine has an interview with Anna Netrebko. The interview was done in August 2008 when Anna was in Salzburg and talks about life, love and motherhood. Anna is on the cover of the magazine and the headlines read "Anna Netrebko & Angela Gheorghiu - The Greatest Living Sopranos".

Anna Netrebko sings Violetta in La Traviata at the Wiener Staatsoper on 4., 7. and 11. May 2009, as it was initially on the schedule. Those performances were removed from her schedule on her official website some days ago, leading to what apparently it has been a misinterpretation of a cancellation on my side. My apologies for any inconcenience. The Wiener Staatsoper kindly told me that Anna Netrebko had signed a contract for these performances and she will sing them. Finally, today, those performances have been added again on her schedule on her official website.
Anna Netrebko reduces the number of performances she had initially planned to sing in La Traviata at the San Francisco Opera in 2009. According to her just updated schedule on her brand new redesigned website, she would not sing the performances initially scheduled on 1. and 5. July 2009. Nevertheless, on the San Francisco Opera website, the cast change appears only for the performance on 5. July, where Anna Netrebko has been replaced by Elizabeth Futral.
Updated on 10. September 2008 The San Francisco Opera has confirmed by email that Anna Netrebko has dropped out only from the performance on 5. July and she is scheduled to sing on 1. July. Anna Netrebko Schedule for the 2008-2009 Season
