Update 7. May 2011: Erwin Schrott will sing the role of Leporello
Its great that Anna is doing so much Mozart this year. I always thought she was great in this repertoire.
ReplyDeleteI was kinda disappointed that she isn't singing the Countess in Figaro this year. I asked her (almost 9 years ago I think) whether she planned to sing the Coutness and at that time she expressed and intense disinterest in the role. I'm glad she seems to have changed her mind and hope to catch her doing it. In the meantime I'd like to catch one of the Don Gs and might have a chance to see the one in Berlin. (Wonder who is doing the Leporello. I would think Pape might be a possibility, especially in Berlin. Hanno Muller-Brachmann is another.
If you check the new repertoire section you will realize that the composer she has been singing more roles is Mozart. And she will add a new one with the Countess. Nevertheless, I don't share your excitement about this one. For me she is Susanna.
ReplyDeleteI had read that Schrott could be involved in this Berlin cast... Still Leporello to be fixed. Would not be a bad option, of course, but if Pape sings Leporello would be great. And being Berlin that sounds quite reasonable.
Hehehe... just checked the website and now it is announced... it will be Erwin Schrott!
ReplyDeleteThat was obvious.
ReplyDeleteI kinda see what you mean about the Countess but she should at least sing it very beautifully. I like Roschmann (herself a great Susanna) but if you listen to the DVD from Salzurg I think you'll find that even at that time Anna had the richer voice which is kind of an odd vocal juxtposition between the Contess and Susanna.
I generally think Mozart is often cast with voices that are (occasionally much) too light but even so Anna's voice is just to plush right now to sing Susanna and we'll have an almost impossible time finding a Countess who can provide the requisite contrast with Anna's Susanna and still have anything like the needed flexibility and agility.
Anyway, this Don G looks great. I imagine tickets will be hard to come by and I'm booking the moment it goes on sale.
